THE HON. JOHN HOWARD, LEADER OF THE OPPOSITION

* * *

In which we learn a new trick with a coin and a piece of cardboard.

Mr Howard, thanks for your time.

Pleasure.

You’ve had problems recently with describing exactly what your policy is on certain matters, haven’t you?

No, there was an incident the other day where I said something that wasn’t quite right.

This was when you were at the school?

No, this was just the other day.

Yes, but you were talking to school students.

Yes. I see. Yes I was.

And you’d said you’d stop uranium sales to France.

Yes, stupid idea.

I think it’s quite a good idea, isn’t it?

Not to sell uranium?

Yes.

Yes, that’s a good idea. Saying so wasn’t a very good idea.

Why not?

Because it’s not our policy.

Ah, I see, it’s not your policy.

No, it isn’t.

Oh, and you were saying it was?

Yes.

Just because it was a good idea?

Yes.

You just assumed if it was a good idea it would be Liberal Party policy?

Yes. Stupid idea.

But there’s been a bit of this lately, hasn’t there?

No.

Going right back to John Hewson in fact.

(Thinks, can’t recall) Hewson…Hewson.

And Alexander Downer?

No. Don’t tell me.

No-one seems to know what’s going on.

Well that’s not the case now. I know our policy position on any issue you care to name.

But you keep changing your mind.

No, we don’t. You name an area, I’ll tell you the policy position.

Well, will you stop uranium exports to France?

(Screen splits into four) Yes/No/ Well, we’d have to look at the whole position. I don’t want to be dragged into a lot of speculation, I mean that’s not the issue.

Are you going to announce your interest rates policy?

(Screen splits into four) Yes/No/ Well, we’d have to look at the whole position. I don’t want to be dragged into a lot of speculation, I mean that’s not the issue.

You haven’t been very strong on environmental issues.

Yes, we have.

Have you got environmental policies?

(Screen splits into four) Yes/No/ Well, we’d have to look at the whole position. I don’t want to be dragged into a lot of speculation, I mean that’s not the issue.

Do you intend to continue with the Aboriginal reconciliation program begun by Mr Keating?

Well, I don’t know that he began it.

Well, it was begun by Labor governments and Mr Keating has turned it into legislation, hasn’t he?

Yes he has, and I think history will probably regard that as part of his vision for Australia. I don’t think anyone can take that away from Mr Keating.

Will you be carrying on that commitment if you get into Government?

(Screen splits into four) Yes/No/ Well, we’d have to look at the whole position. I don’t want to be dragged into a lot of speculation, I mean that’s not the issue.

Do you think you’ll get into Government?

Yes I do. Queensland is a pretty good indication. I think they’re gone.

If you can be consistent on policies.

Yes, which we are.

Mr Howard, thanks for your time.

Pleasure.

Do you want a cab?

(Screen splits into four) Yes/No/ Well, we’d have to look at the whole position. I don’t want to be dragged into a lot of speculation, I mean that’s not the issue.
